When the Spanish returned from the New World bearing ships laden with gold, they returned with more than just material wealth. They returned with stories of the indigenous savages they had encountered. Stories of heathen gods, of demons and angels, but perhaps strangest of all, stories of men from the north with hair like fire and fair skin that would burn easily in the sun.
Mere years later, they discovered these "Fire Men" by sheer accident. Exploring northward of the rich treasure-laden islands of the Caribbean, they discovered what seemed to be an odd parallel to European society. An entire nation that had named itself "Éire Nua", which translators were soon able to discover meant "New Ireland" in the Irish tongue. It seemed impossible. No one could fully believe that the Irish, a nation that had long lay base to the might of English domination, could have constructed a mighty, independent kingdom in this new world.
Scholars scoured through the records of the past to try and find an explanation. Before long, a Scottish scholar dug out a manuscript, long thought lost to time, speaking of a man who went by the name of Máelechlainn Mac Giolla Dhomhnaigh, though many had chosen to name him "The Madman". In the days of the Black Plague that had laid low vast swathes of Europe, Máelechlainn had taken 6 ships across the water, claiming he would seek refuge on the legendary island of Hy-Brasil. Neither he nor any of the 16 families that accompanied him were ever heard from again.
Now, we know why.
